The biannual Fort Custer Dryland races are coming up in April.
The races kick off at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 2 and 3, at Fort Custer, located at 5163 Fort Custer Dr. in Augusta. The events are free and open to the public.
The event features multiple dog and human races including canicross, bikejoring, scootering, and more. Teams of individuals and their dogs come from all over Michigan to compete against one another in these unique dog sports.
Spectators are encouraged to ask questions, observe, and pet the dogs. For those experienced with dog sports, the event offers sale of equipment, T-shirts, competition, awards, demos, community, and networking among like-minded individuals.
Those participating and spectating will spend the weekend camping community-style at the Fort Custer campground, including potluck meals and evening fireside conversations. This is less of an event and more of a family reunion.
Jennifer Taylor said she enjoys the races every year and encourages people to come out.
“Being at the starting line when the dogs go out is the most fun,” Taylor said.
Sara Steele, a seasoned event spectator, looks forward to this event every year.
“My daughter got me interested in going,” Steele said. “I have learned that the animals crave the race as much as the people.”
