Kellogg Community College is featuring landscape photography shot by students from the College’s Photography and Multimedia Program in an art exhibit on campus in Battle Creek this summer.
The exhibit, titled “The American Southwest,” includes more than two dozen photos shot by 10 students from KCC’s summer ART 220: Landscape Photography class. The exhibit opened June 25 and will run through Sept. 6 at the Eleanor R. and Robert A. DeVries Gallery in the Davidson Visual and Performing Arts Center on KCC’s campus at 450 North Ave., Battle Creek.
The exhibit is free and open to the public for viewing during regular gallery hours, which are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays. A Closing Reception for the exhibit, which is also free and open to the public, will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6 at the gallery.
KCC’s Landscape Photography class is a travel photography course offered in different out of state locations once every other year. The course helps students develop skills related to extended travel, camping and landscape photography and fosters a greater appreciation for diverse cultures.
In May the class traveled more than 4,700 miles in 12 days, camping in five different states. They visited sites including the Palo Duro Canyon State Park in Texas; Coconino National Forest, Grand Canyon National Park, the Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument and the Wupatki National Monument in Arizona; Monument Valley on the Arizona-Utah border; and Arches National Park in Utah.
“On day 10, the day before we turned our bus toward home, I asked the students if they had the ability, would they stay longer? The consensus was a resounding yes, that there was so much to see and do, but not enough time,” said Photography and Multimedia Program coordinator, gallery director and art professor Ryan Flathau. “It is my hope that this brief whirlwind tour will sow the seeds for future travel and inspiration from this beautiful country of ours.”
