The Friday after Thanksgiving is known as Black Friday. Most people consider this day the official start of the holiday season. On Black Friday, stores offer irresistible deals to consumers, making it one of the most anticipated days of the year.

“I really like going Black Friday shopping. Last year I went Thanksgiving night. I went to Target and it was crazy. The lines were so backed up, and I didn’t end up getting to shop. This year I think I’m going with my cousin. We will probably end up going to Target, TJMaxx, and more,” said Blake Carroll, Senior.

Most people do not know where the name Black Friday came from. Some suggest that the term originated in Philadelphia. The term was used to describe the heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Others suggest that the name refers to the only day of the year where retail companies “go into the black,” which means making a profit.

“I love going Black Friday shopping! This year I took my oldest son, Jordan, and he was amazed at the great deals that you can get. He also had no idea how much strategy I put into it. I make lists, I map it out and I go. It’s so fun,” said Amy Stevens, history teacher.

Although Black Friday receives a lot of positive attention, there have been instances in the past that have caused problems. With low prices and great deals, fights have broken out during Black Friday sales among customers in order to get the lowest prices and best products.

“We usually don’t go Black Friday shopping. I don’t like it because there’s too many people. This year we decided to go to Target and Dick’s. There were so many people, but it was worth it for the deals,” said Akaela Feng, junior.

Following Black Friday, consumers wait anxiously for Cyber Monday where they can online shop with deals similar to those of Black Friday. This gives people easy access to great deals as well as easy shopping.

“I prefer Cyber Monday because I don’t like getting up early and waiting in lines on Black Friday. It’s much easier to just hop online and shop rather than having to drive somewhere,” said Christian D’Orgeix, Senior.
